Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on September 17, 2023

It’s just another ordinary day for Damien, except it isn’t quite so. It’s his birthday, but he’s not expecting anything special. The thing is, his mother Lilith has been waiting for his nineteenth birthday to arrive and the truth to be revealed to him. When it is, Damien will discover that his mother is a succubus and his birthright is being an incubus. Now all he has to do is figure everything else out. Starting with his mother.

The work is a well told mixture of erotica and story building that follows the main character as he discovers the truth about himself, his mother, and the world that is opened to him. As it is the beginning of the series, there’s a good amount of time spent in building Damien and his mother Lilith’s characters and personality, both of whom absolutely delighted me. Their personalities are wonderful, the awkwardness which Damien finds himself in and the absolute surety of Lilith were wonderful to watch unfold.

The erotica within the work is more romantic than anything else. There’s passion, exploration and understanding that fit both main characters well. It’s not sex for the sake of it, which made Damien’s first tentative steps as an incubus rather unique. In many incubus stories, the characters personality changes dramatically when they become an incubus. This doesn’t happen with Damien and honestly it brought me to adore him and his story even more. More than anything else, it’s Damien and Lilith, how they deal with the new reality which captivated me long before the erotica came.

The main part of the erotica focuses on Damien and Lilith, and while there is an incest aspect to this work, it’s really not that overt overall. That’s mainly through the larger story universe, they are incubus and succubus after all. It’s sensually described, the love between them is wonderful. Towards the end of the work there is another erotic scene for Damien in which it’s a bit more needful and passionate, but in a different way with a different character. In that encounter comes more told about Damien and it was so very enlightening.

Damien, the newfound incubus of the work, is possibly the most adorable incubus character I’ve come across in many, many years. There’s a delicious innocence around him, his personality holds a wonderful light and that is fun. Once his true nature comes into the work, he doesn’t change who he is. Yes there is confusion, trying to come to terms with his mother being a succubus and not the least of which he coming to terms with having wings. His form changes, becoming more sexually alluring than he was, but it doesn’t change who he is. That really matters and it’s a breath of fresh air that was just delightful.

Lilith, his succubus mother, is just a lot of fun in so many ways. She’s smart, a bit sarcastic and her amusement at times just brought me a smile. There’s also a hidden strength within her that is hinted at and really is something special. But she’s also so very much a naughty succubus with her own desires and needs which shape Damien’s life and story captivatingly.

As this is the beginning of a new series, there’s quite a few interesting threads opened, some characters brought to the fore to return to. Like this author’s larger story universe and the characters within, the time spent to create the ground work to build on offers much for the series to follow on from. There’s a lot of promise here and I can hardly wait for what’s next.

Five out of five pitchforks.

I have many thoughts about what has been revealed about Damien and Lilith. I have some hopes for the future of the series, what trials he will face, the revelations about his mother that might be. It’s that mystery of what comes next that brings my anticipation of what’s next. It should be a lot of fun to see.
