Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on December 24, 2023

Sometimes we make choices that have implications we don’t expect. Lucy has made a lot of them in her life and they are starting to bite her in the ass. The thing is, that ass of hers is desired by many, whether to have their way with her, or punish her for what she has done. Perhaps there’s a way out, if she can get past her own nature and discover that there are more important things to risk her life for.

The work is an interesting mixture of romance, adventure, myths and mystery that combine into a really delightful story. It’s fast paced, the work keeps pushing onto the next and next moment endlessly. That works well to keep things moving and along the way there are a number of interesting characters that appear to throw a wrench in the works.

The work focuses on the main character Lucy, but shifts perspective chapter to chapter along the way. It works reasonably well, but at times a scene is repeated from two different viewpoints and I’m unsure if it really gave all that much to the story that required and entire chapter by itself. There’s also a lot of snark and attitude from Lucy, which helps to define her character. However at a certain point all of the references become too over the top and feel like they take away from her character being a personality of her own.

Yaelyn, the incubus of the work, is delightfully sexual and erotic in his nature. It was a lot of fun to see him deal with Lucy’s nature, to get past her barriers and bring her to see the truth. That all said, Yaelyn is along for the ride as is Reznik, the other demon of the work. They are both, in their own ways, protecting themselves from Lucy, and it takes a lot of story before they finally get to the truth of the matter and the three can sort things out.

Much of the story revolves around the adventure and when the romance, and sensuality appears, it’s a welcome change, the story slows a bit and there’s time to allow the three to develop as characters and offer a way forward to the climax of the story, which was pleasantly surprising.

Three and half out of five pitchforks.

The work is less about telling the story of an incubus and more about creating a universe and characters who mesh well in the story. It’s delightful in doing so, the romance and adventure which unfolds is really well done. How things end offers quite a few paths forwards and it would be interesting to see what happens next by far.
