Plot Summary

Newly crowned Wizard King of the North, Alex Rogers, has a real mess on his hands. The surprise successor to the vanquished Vassal King Ailmer, he inherits a kingdom in shambles. Bankrupt from the looted treasury and past mismanagement of the northern kingdom, he must find a way to restore prosperity in a place where almost no one seeks his involvement.

Besides the financial woes, he is besieged by the Lords of Gundor, all seeking a return to the days when there was no central kingdom and the Lords themselves ruled unchallenged on their holdings in the Gundor Valley. Undermined from his first day on the throne, Alex must put them in check with no army, no money, and few allies to draw upon.

As if a bankrupt kingdom and unruly Lords seeking his overthrow were not enough, his newly born child has become the focal point of interest to parties unknown. This unseen threat snatches the newborn child out from under the watchful eye of parents desperate to reclaim their heir. It’s now up to Cassie and Alex to move heaven and earth to reclaim their child and put an end to any plans to alter their heir’s destiny.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on October 19, 2025

A battle won, a future uncertain and a question remaining. The dark forces still look to interfere with what Alex desires for his family. The problem is that others have their desires and his family is at their focus.

The work is a fantasy adventure with a modern edge overall. There is a mystery to explore, questions needing to be asked, and a complicated plot that turns about itself often. Quite an engrossing tale of passion, need, and want, how the characters come to terms with themselves and the threats about them is so very telling about each of them.

Joey, the succubus of the work, isn’t stereotypical or evil by nature. She’s something of a survivor looking to hold herself together and do no harm in spite of what others might think of her. Her thoughts and what drives her are interesting and it would have been nice to see more of that, but she’s far from being the focus of this work by far.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

A fantasy adventure story with a bit of mystery wrapped into it that has a succubus as a minor character. Joey is interesting, but really it’s the mythos of succubi and incubi that I would have liked more time and detail spent upon. An interesting read and the series is as well, but it’s not very much a succubus themed or character focused work.
