Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 3, 2017

There are many things that Miss Jorgan has encountered as a school teacher. But perhaps the most disturbing are the students in her new class. There’s something odd about them, how they all seem to have similar features. But that’s just the beginning of the mystery and the temptation that she will face and how that will change her.

The work is mainly a mystery with a dash of erotica from time to time. The balance through much of the work is towards setting up the creepiness, of deepening the mystery and then, when the moment comes, turning the story towards the source of the troubles and drawing Miss Jorgan into that erotic entanglement.

While the mystery worked, the children are creepy in a Village of the Damned sort of way, the staccato dialogue, the abrupt scenes and, at times, the misplaced emotional notes, all served to make the creepy take over the story. The children are wiser than their age suggests, the adults are clueless or simply turn a blind eye to things. Save for Miss Jorgan, who finds herself the focus of all else around her.

Another oddity of the work is that we never learn Miss Jorgan’s name. She’s only referred to in one way throughout the story, which reads as odd in the most erotic moments of the work. Similarly, the incubus never reveals his name either.

The incubus himself is a ghost, popping in and out of the story, never really having a focus on himself. When he does materialize, Miss Jorgan falls into his power and the erotica drops into place. There’s a lot of assumptions that have to be made with the incubus of this work, but it seems to make sense. Similarly, those we only know of the boys in the class and what they likely are, there are a few girls and it seems likely what they are, if it is never touched on or developed..

Overall the work is well written, there’s a interesting plot and the ending leaves something to wonder about. But I didn’t really like that the incubus character never was given a name, was in the shadows as much as he was. I felt like there was a good deal of plot left missing and that was a shame. A bit creepy, some simmering heat, but at the end there just was a piece of the puzzle missing and that just keeps bothering me.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks

There needs to be a bit more meaning around the incubus, a name would be nice to have. Miss Jorgan, as fascinating as she is, seems a little two dimensional at times. Perhaps more in the way of narrative or expansion on scenes and events would have helped somewhat.

I did not read any other works in the series, but I can say from the perspective of a creepy mystery with a hint of erotica, this work reads well. The issue for me is missing bits and pieces that would have held my interest more.
