Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on March 7, 2023

Vistrarii is a retired mage, but he is still sought for his knowledge and experience with objects of magic and mystery. Offered a necklace by a shopkeeper, the mystery cannot be resisted. But he will soon discover that there’s more to the necklace than he expected, and the curse might be far more than just a curse alone.

The work is an erotic mystery which tells a fascinating story about the main character Vistrarii and the world around him. The world is really well detailed, Vistrarii himself is delightfully sure of himself and when the story falls into the depths of the mystery his singular weakness of solving mysteries bites him.

But while there’s a real danger in the curse, it also takes the story to a unique experience for Vistrarii and more so tells, if in more of a tease than anything else, of the source of the erotic mystery that claims him. That mystery revolves around the incubus of the work, who is never named, never speaks, and is something of a ghost overall.

It is the incubus himself that is both a mystery and a tragedy in what Vistrarii discovers and what the result of the curse has become. The heat in the erotica is a lovely slow burn and it’s a delight to watch unfold. But there’s still such a telling undercurrent of sadness which I found tempered the heat overall.

The story ends in a way that felt disappointing. Vistrarii made a decision that just felt a bit revengeful and honestly took a good deal of my like of him. Yes, the story involved an incubus, but still the end result seemed petty which was a shame.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

The story is well written, interesting and has lovely heat in the telling. It’s disappointing however that the incubus was never named, more so that the conclusion of the story feels so tepid and lost. Perhaps there is more of a story to tell, perhaps the incubus himself will tell the tale. The mystery is revealed, but the story just feels somehow incomplete.
