Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 20, 2025
Nina never believed in anything but the ordinary world around her. An encounter with the mysterious brings her into the arms of an incubus who stokes the flames of her imagination and more.
The story of “An Incubus” is a mixture of self-discovery, mystery, passion and need which combines into quite a telling story. Nina, the main character of the work beings as being a bit unlikeable, but soon, through the encounters with the incubus, turns from being very much one-dimensional into a far more interesting and fleshed out one. The story is captivating, the erotic heat is really well done and it’s very much a page turner.
While this is a story which revolves around encounters with an incubus, it’s something a little bit more than that. While the erotica is a delight, what held me are the thoughts Nina has as she tries to come to terms with the supernatural and then explore her newfound sexuality. It’s such an interesting shift in personality and mood which, when added with the erotica, allows for something quite unique to be told.
The incubus of the work, who is never named, is not really stereotypical, save for a little bit so at the beginning of the encounters. Far more a sexual spirit, a ghost, perhaps a teasing influence leading to passion and that was rather a unique way to express them. It’s a shame they were never named, or really spoke more than fragments of words and Nina’s name. It is an achingly sad arc, the last scene together with Nina is dearly emotion and while it brings about something wonderful, there’s also a bit of wistful ache as well.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
It is a short story of course, but it remains intriguing when the story closes. With that said, I wonder about the what-if’s, the moments not told and what else might have been. Perhaps there’s a larger story here to be explored and I think that’s an interesting thing to consider.
For the collection as a whole, three out of five pitchforks.
The balance of the stories are fascinating in their own ways, but none really held me as much as Nina’s story did. A lovely read, the writing is very good and the characters are captivating. Well worth a read and to wonder about as well.
