Plot Summary

Braeden is a normal girl just trying to survive high school. She’s got two devoted friends, Royal and Cassie, and together they’re doing a pretty good job of shrugging off the slings and arrows cast their way by the popular crowd. She lives with her loving father, Murphy, an ex-soldier who has raised Braeden on his own since her mother died in childbirth. When a new boy, Lucas, moves into the house next door, Braeden finds herself falling in love for the first time. And to her thrilled surprise, Lucas seems to be falling for her, too.

But as her sixteenth birthday approaches, Braeden discovers there’s more to our world than most people know. Since the beginning of time, humankind has been at war with the Lilitu, a race of enticing demons that prey on human souls. Murphy is a member of the Guard, the secret army that stands watch against the Lilitu. So are Braeden’s new neighbors, including Lucas. His brother was killed by a Lilitu, and all Lucas wants is to help rid the world of these demons.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Braeden’s entire world is rocked when she learns that she is the daughter of the Lilitu demon that killed her real father, and that Murphy has raised her for the Guard to be a secret weapon in the war between the Sons of Adam and the Daughters of Lilith. And if her mysterious mother was a Lilitu - that means Braeden herself is a demon. She can never have a romantic relationship or she’ll risk hurting the guy she’s with. Lucas is the only member of the Guard who doesn’t know the truth about her.

As her supernatural powers begin to develop, Braeden is contacted by another Lilitu who tells her war is coming: the Lilitu are determined to reclaim the Earth from the Sons of Adam. Braeden must make a choice. She can join forces with the Guard and fight to protect the friends and family she loves - or she can lose herself in her Lilitu powers, reclaim an ancient birthright, and live forever. As she struggles to maintain a sense of who she is, Braeden learns that the right answers aren’t always clear or easy, and as for “good” and “evil” – it all depends on how we choose to act.
