Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 3, 2021

Valeria made a mistake ages ago for which her needs and nature are pressing on her endlessly. A chance discovery offers a path to relief, but the price to be paid, and there are many, could change her beyond expectation.

The work is a short hot flash of erotica set in a fantasy universe which focuses on Valeria over all else. Her struggles with the curse, which is a really nasty one to be clear, are emotional and acted as a good hook to the story. As things developed, and the path she had to take became clear, it was less about her and more about the sexual encounters.

That brought some heat to the story, but it’s tepid overall. The emotions felt forced, desire wasn’t part of things. The erotica was a means to an end, and in being so it turned the story towards something expected when Salazar, the incubus of the work appeared.

Salazar is, for the most part, stereotypically focused on being in control, holding his power over Valeria’s needs and bending her to his will and dominance. He’s very two-dimensional in his character which considering how much effort was in Valeria’s own was a surprise.

The work could use another editing pass, there is some word errors, some of the narration is a bit odd as well. Beyond that, there’s a feeling that the story rushes too quickly into the erotica, which needs more heat, and then loses its path before the next scene comes.

Two and a half out of five pitchforks.

It’s somewhat disappointing in how the story ends, though Salazar’s actions and attitude made it inevitable. bit of a trope in many ways, the real shame is not telling more story and being somewhat lost in the erotica. It has moments, to be clear, but without tying them together and driving the story further than what happens, there’s just a piece missing.
