Desperate times call for a choice to be made that might not be the best of ones. Thalindra needs to save her home, but that means begging for the help of the succubus Vexira and her demands which will forever leave their mark on them both.
The work is a short fantasy adventure erotic story that mainly focuses on what happens between the main characters and the sex scenes that come from the deal they make. It’s a bit of a harsh story telling, the erotica is very much over the top and at times just didn’t have the heat that might have been.
That, for me, comes from the abuse and suffering the main character under goes at the hands, and tail and other whims, of the succubus of the story. It’s all so very raw, the domination aspects are less erotic and more punishment which didn’t really work for me overall. At the same time there was some world building with a little bit of character development as well, but that really didn’t add a lot as for the most part the story was about the sex with a short bit of story on either side of the scenes to tie things together.
Vexira, the succubus of the work, is very much a succubus and she is one that is very dominant, leaning into her evil nature quite strongly as well. Overall her personality is less seductive than simply demanding and forceful and I didn’t really like her as a result. Given the setting and story, her voice in the story felt too modern, not fitting the story well. It’s little things about her that didn’t quite work in the story and perhaps that is my concern overall, but there’s just something about her that could have been shifted a little to one side or the other and made her a lot more interesting.

The work ends in a place that does offer possibilities and those are interesting for the main character. Similarly, for Vexira there was a lot left unexplored, a mythos not really told and that was a little disappointing. There was also a certain expectation from the story title, but that didn’t turn out to happen. As such the title doesn’t work, perhaps something like The Succubus’ Toy might have been a bit on the nose, but a lot more to the point.
