Book Review

It is said that there are daemons in the technology that surrounds us. For some, that is far more than an idea, it’s very real. Dr. Chambers learns that there are things that should never be contacted and never be invited for they will take all one has and leave nothing behind.
The work is a very short horror story that reads and feels like a physiological mystery and drama with a bit of teenage slasher movie character vibe to tie things together. Told from the main character’s perspective, the unease of what occurs in the story slowly builds, hints about what is behind events are told. But it’s more a story about trying to understand the impossible and when the truth is revealed, trying to deal with having to accept it.
It’s not at all a work of erotica and overall the emotional notes are rather thin, mainly due to the characters themselves seeming numb to events. While there is, seemingly, a succubus as the evil of the story, she is an afterthought, a whisper to tug on the main character and be threatening from the shadows.
It’s really not that much of a succubus story overall considering the succubus is never seen and only interacts as a word or two through the story. The thing about this work is that I’m almost certain I have read this story before somewhere but I can’t quite remember where that was or who wrote it. Still, the concept behind the succubus could be turned into something more substantial and that brings me to a thought.
Where the story ends, there’s a very clear path to continue it. Within that comes some questions about what might, possibly, the succubus look like or how she could become more present in a larger story. That’s not likely to happen, but it is an intriguing thought.
Two out of five pitchforks.
Far too short, not nearly enough succubus to be found here The idea could be taken further and become quite interesting. But as things are, this is a tepid horror mystery with a jump scare and a succubus that exists as a extensional threat and nothing more.
