Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on May 18, 2025
There are some parties that are more than legendary. They exist in a place which few have seen, less still have experienced and but a handful know an inkling of the truth. Perhaps this Halloween the truth will be revealed in the midst of an encounter with a horned devil called Carphalea.
The work is a very well told hot flash which builds an interesting world with mysterious characters before pulling the reader as the main character, it is told from the first-person perspective, deeply into a lesbian tryst that is lovely. There are hints of mind control, a very strong succubus theme of course, but also a darkly mysterious world of devils and their kin which is touched on enough to tantalize but isn’t deeply fleshed out.
Carphalea, the succubus of the work, has all of the aspects of a seduction focused succubus with some quite dominant aspects, but they don’t overcome her sensuality or depth of power. I was quite pleased when her horns and tail came fully into view and all of the things she was doing to the main character was a delight. She is a bit on the naughty side of evil, there’s hints of other things in her character that appear in passing as well. It’s a shame that the story didn’t allow for a deeper exploration of her, but the focus was on the erotica, not the universe building as much as it could have been.
That’s the real shame here overall, that the universe around Carphalea is touched on, characters are met, little stories started and then they just don’t go anywhere save for being a terrible tease. Given the mysteries around Carphalea, and there are a lot of them, it just seems such a shame to add all this spice and temptation to the story, peek around the curtain, and then be taken away.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
The story ends in a way that leaves a very obvious path forwards for both characters. With that said, I think there is so much mystery surrounding this setting, characters and otherwise, that some related stories could come from this. What happened to Lillian is a very clear example of that and would be interesting to explore. A mysterious and hot read that’s a lot of fun to enjoy, but just a bit short which is a shame.
