Plot Summary

Melissa St. Claire didn’t believe in the paranormal until she spent a night with the devil. After retiring from a career in modelling, Melissa joined the Fellowship of Anomalous Paranormal Studies (F. A. P. S, for short) as a hardcore sceptic, hoping to debunk hauntings and investigate weirdness across the country. Now the F. A. P. S crew are looking into a real haunting—a succubus is hiding in The Admiral James Inn in New England, and Ms St. Claire is about to experience a ghostly encounter she’ll never forget.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on February 24, 2023

Melissa’s life hasn’t quite taken the path she expected. It takes a more unexpected path when she finds herself in the presence of a succubus that wants something, and Melissa finds she wants the same, even if she cannot quite admit it to herself. A deal made brings them both to the encounter both need to be free.

The work is an interesting mixture of erotica and light supernatural themes that work very well together to tell the story of the main characters. While the story focuses on Melissa, the main character and her experience, she’s more of a means to an end overall. Ra’Laag, the succubus of the story, takes control from the instant she appears and she’s ever so captivating a character.

There’s something of a royal aspect to Ra’Laag in her speech and the form she takes. More so, her control of Melissa before the actual possession, and how that translates into the taking of Dale, the third member of the gathering, is wonderfully told. The story leading up to Ra’Laag appearing is spooky and offers some supernatural bumps in the night which add to the building tension and that worked well.

Still, it is very clear from the storytelling that Ra’Laag is pulling the strings from the moment Melissa and Dale enter the hotel and they are firmly trapped in her web. While Ra’Laag is a succubus, she really doesn’t quite offer herself in a stereotypical way. She’s seductive, powerful and dangerous without question. But she’s not really overtly evil which made her that much more wonderful.

The erotica kind of sneaks up in the telling of the story and that happens in a way that I found both amusing and quite telling. The heat simmers to the climax and the way that Ra’Laag toyed with both Melissa and Dale was perfect in the way a succubus would to get everything she could from them.

It is a bit rushed however at times part the first appearance of Ra’Laag and her possession of Melissa. At times the story felt like it was tripping over itself to get to the sex, which I thought was a shame. As much of a tease as Ra’Laag seemed to be, it felt like a missed opportunity to tell more about her.

Really that’s the single thing that was missing here. The work ends in an interesting way and the one that really makes me wonder is Ra’Laag herself. The hints about her, the comment she makes at the climax really offers something to take the story forwards.

Four out of five pitchforks.

Ra’Laag is far more interesting as a mystery of course, but beyond that, telling her story and possibly having the other characters encounter her again might take things in unexpected directions. Perhaps Melissa isn’t really free of her and perhaps there’s something left behind. It would be a story to tell wouldn’t it?
