Plot Summary

The pact reads: freely given, both sides, or nothing at all. Delia Faber wrote it herself. It is the only reason she is still alive. She spent fifteen years getting people out of bad contracts. Then she died on a wet interstate and woke grey-skinned and horned, waist-deep in meltwater at the bottom of a demon-run Labyrinth. The System there calls itself the Docket, and it has already filed her: Ash-Imp. Unranked. Unnamed. It still logs the summoning debt her dead summoner ran up to call her across, and someone is reading it.

She has a litigator's eye and a hunger with one legal source: desire offered out loud, on the record. Every honest yes makes her stronger. So she claims a flooded dead-end nobody wants, writes every feeding-pact fair even when fair costs her, and builds a court from what the Labyrinth threw away.

Then a Concord quartermaster reads her file. Hunters kill demons on sight for the bounty, but he has done the arithmetic: she is worth more owned and taxed than dead. It is the exact instrument she spent her career prying other people loose from. She has no intention of signing it.
