Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 21, 2017

Grace makes a choice and in doing so she encounters something she’s not before. It isn’t the lights of LA, it’s not feeling lost. Nikki took care of that problem when they met and what Grace has to figure out is not so much who she is, but who she wants to be.

Overall the work is a hot flash with some moments of heat mixed with a story that can’t quite find it’s way. The story is scattered, there’s a lot of plot ideas and direction to take, but the author doesn’t seem to focus long enough to make that story unfold. That’s a shame really because there’s a lot of points where the ideas offered I wanted to see happen, but they did not.

There’s a distinct lack of an overall plot to the work and that’s a real shame. Nikki might be a succubus, but that’s so hard to sort out for how the story is told. The lack of focus, of telling a coherent story, takes away from what otherwise might have been something interesting.

Grace has much going for her, but as the story moves towards the climax, her personality fades out, becoming second to the various plot ideas that pop in from time to time. Perhaps the most bothersome of these is Nikki. At one point she describes herself as a succubus, but then the story doesn’t pay that off really well. That’s not to say there aren’t hints about what’s happening, it’s more than aspects of Nikki, her real life, what she’s connected to, aren’t explored. They appear for a line or two, sometimes a paragraph, and then are dropped for the next bit of random thought that appears.

Where the story ends leaves questions as, to be honest, the entire work does. I think expanding on the story, creating more of a connection between Nikki and Grace needed to happen. There’s too much that happens in a very short time and the story is rushed. There needs to be time to breath, to learn something more and it just doesn’t happen regrettably. The scattering of plot ideas, of a sentence or two that offers something, only to be taken away for the story needing to move on is a problem.

The work needs an editing pass to improve on the narrative, to connect the scenes together better than they are. The erotica is good, but could be more so with some extra time taken to tell more of the seduction, Grace’s experiences and, as well, the moments in-between and what Nikki really is.

The questions left in the ending felt like the author came to a point and then walked away from the story. There’s a need, I felt, that the story wasn’t over, that there was more to be told, but wasn’t. Nikki’s world is offered as a tease, much like Grace’s experiences are, and then things explode in passion before burning away.

Two out of five pitchforks.

I feel like this work needs a rewrite, if only to clean up the narrative and add another ten or so pages of storytelling. Hot flashes can work, but when there’s a disconnect between each, then there’s something missing. Taking the time to explore the characters, I think, would make a real difference here.
