Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on April 30, 2024

There’s no possible way that the book Natalia bought at the odd shop could bring her perfect lover. But curiosity is irroestiable and Natalia will discover that Alcard is just as much so.

The work is a hot flash of medium length which tells a story of passions desired, needs discovered, and one woman’s discovery of the passions of an incubus of her own. The world building is quite well done, how things come together is a lovely mystery in itself as that is told.

Much of the story is centred on the appearance of Alcard, the incubus of the work, appearing, teasing and tempting Natalia and then doing every naughty thing that she has ever desired. The heat between the two is well done and the erotic scenes that appear add little bursts of heat that I did enjoy.

Alcard is, however, something of a cypher in that his thoughts aren’t really explored, his past isn’t told either. He is dominant but not really controlling which I thought worked well. He’s not really evil or stereotypical and that aspect was well played with through the story.

There are a number of paths the story could have taken to add more depth to it however. The opening scene I was expecting to return at ta later point, which would have been so very funny and very delightful as well. The passions between the main characters, while given voice, felt like something was missing between them that wasn’t given a chance to develop before the story closed. When it did, that aspect seemed glossed over and it really didn’t need to be.

The work needs another editing pass, there are a number of missing words here and there as well as trains of story and thought that suddenly come to a halt and aren’t returned to. The characters are interesting in their own ways, but a bit more character development above the erotica I think would have added a lot to the story as well.

Three and a half out of five pitchforks.

Where the story comes to a close does offer some intriguing possibilities for a follow on work. How does Alcard deal with the modern world, it is all sex and passion or is there something more and deeper to their relationship. There are other possibilities of course and really that’s the thing about this work. It’s were it could, and really should, go that interests me. Perhaps it will, one never knows.
