Plot Summary
Things are rough for Leo. Shitty job, shitty love life, and a shitty time of things in general. To top it off, the girl he's pining after only considers him a friend. In the night, a succubus offers him a way out of his predicament: the capability to control the minds of those around him! This proves to be too alluring, despite the obvious moral quandaries involved. But the demon has other plans, ones that involve extracting Leo's soul!

Leo has a number of things that aren’t going as well as he’d like them to be. He’s looking for some mercy and he finds himself in Mercy’s grip. The promise of a succubus comes with some strings attached and Leo discovers that he might not care all that much about them. But someone else does and Leo discovers that there things more important than sex, as surprising as that is.
The work is a mixture of a series of hot flashes with a bit of mind control and fantasy popping in at various points in the story. There’s quite a bit of a supernatural theme as well, not just in Mercy, who is the succubus of the work, but also in that the world this story is set in seems to have all sorts of supernatural beings as part of it.
What I found the most wonderful was the sense of humour, the sidelong bits of snark from time to time as well as how the character interactions felt real, that there was some meaning behind every moment and it wasn’t just dialogue for the sake of it.
The heat in the erotica is quite good, the mind control scenes are a bit odd at points, but overall work as things get hot and heated between the characters. The succubus aspects of the story, in hoe Mercy acts, what she wants, and goes about getting it, all hit her character well and I couldn’t help but being bemused by what happens with her as the story unfolds.
Mercy is a bit different as a succubus, those there are some aspects of her personality at the beginning where she’s bordering on being stereotypical, but the author manages to get past that into the larger, and far more interesting story than the erotica very quickly which makes Mercy a far better character as things are revealed.
That said, there’s not nearly enough told about Mercy, about succubi in this universe. It’s not only that, but more it’s not explaining how Leo knows about the supernatural beings around him, how blasé he is at times about both Mercy and Lynde, who is, as a whole, actually more interesting than both Mercy and Leo overall.
The story made me laugh, the characters are well written and it’s just the most delightfully fun work overall. It is short, really there is a lot more to be told, more story and more about the characters and I wish that more time had been taken to do so. That’s really the main problem here in that there’s a lot of story left to the side, not explored, and I wish that had been.
Four and a half out of five pitchforks.
There’s not quite enough explanation as to why Leo knows so much about the supernatural around him, nor is there really enough time spent telling something about Mercy than there is. I think those were both missed stories and really needed to be told.
But this is a delightfully funny and smart piece of storytelling overall and I enjoyed the work overall as such. There’s just some little things along the way that could have added more than there is. Perhaps there will be a part two sometime, there’s a path for that, and I’d like to see what happens next.
Leo’s life has gotten interesting after all, that’s a story that needs to be told.
