There are always stories with darkness in them. It is, for some at least, part and parcel of what Succubi or Incubi are. They are seen to be evil, do evil, and create evil. They prey on others, bend their will or worse, and in the end their plans are to create whatever destruction they are able to.
There is another side to that story however, and it comes from those who may not be able to stop them, but in spite of everything… They find a means to have their own small piece of light shine in spite of the darkness around them…
It is, I have to say, unclear that the being that threatens Harper and her family is an Incubus. That word isn’t used in this story, but overall it would seem to fit the situation that Harper finds herself in and, as such, I can’t think of a better description really…
While the Incubus is part and parcel of the story, over the course of the work it becomes more evident that it is less about the creature and what it wants then why Harper is in the situation she is in. The who, why and when are tragic and in truth it is the darkest part of the story when what happened is revealed.
There is. more than anything else, that tone of loss, regret, and other dark emotions that drives most of the story forwards but in all of that… there is a little glimmer of Harper’s own light. By that I mean she does, in the end, find herself in a situation she never agreed to, or wanted. But in spite of that, in spite of the evil that surrounds her and her family, she can still find something to hold onto that matters…
All of this is true, but honestly for me it was a very hard read for everything that happens in the story, the secrets revealed and what transpires. I will say that the ending of the story, Harper’s final thoughts made up for much of my feelings over the story as a whole… In the end, that is what matters isn’t it?
I’ll give this work two pitchforks out of five.
It is a story about darkness, human and otherwise and while it tells that story well, I just found myself uncomfortable with it all… Some will find it more to their liking, but it wasn’t a story for me at least…
