Plot Summary

All hell broke loose. Literally.

Ten years ago, Lucifer and his Four Horsemen escaped from Hell, toppled the U.S. government, and conquered our country. Today, humans have two options. Live in one of four Sectors controlled by the Horsemen or survive in the Wastelands of what used to be the United States.

But I’m a survivor.

Me? I chose the third option. Join a rebel organization plotting to assassinate Lucifer and his Four Horsemen to end the Demon Apocalypse. It turns out that the King of Hell and his four demon generals have weaknesses for beautiful women, and I’m the sexiest, badass bitch in this rebellion. Oh, and I’m not the type of woman to sit back and wait for someone else to save her.

Now, my options are sex or death.

My boss didn’t warn me that my first target, Famine, is an incubus. When I track him down with my best friend, he marks me with a kiss and seals our bond with the most mind-numbing orgasm I’ve ever had. I become his sex slave. Now, if I don’t get down and dirty with one of humanity’s greatest enemies, I’ll wither away and die. Oh, and if I succeed in my mission to kill him, then I die, too.

I am so screwed. In more ways than one.

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on November 5, 2023

One day the world changed and it wasn’t for the better. Nothing is quite the same anyone, beings walk the Earth and have taken control. What little resistance is left seeks a means for revenge and Hayden believes she will be the one to make that happen. But the reality is vastly different when she loses the one thing she cherishes above all, and the incubus she was sent to kill has other ideas about Hayden, and she’s not sure they are a bad idea.

The work is best described as an introduction to the story universe as a whole, and the main character of the series, Hayden. Very fast-paced, the story races through setting up Hayden and her partner Kat before dropping the incubus character Famine into their lives and the story is off and running. The main focus is on the action adventure part of the work with the erotica being mainly a slow burn in the background that, more often than not, suffers interruptions to frustrate the characters and push the story onwards.

Hayden is a very strongly willed character who finds herself placed into a situation that spirals out of control and the events that come from what she and Kat were supposed to do verses what they are forced to do are both deeply troubling and expand her character. There’s all sorts of hints dropped that something is odd about her, events transpire to reveal a truth about her friend Kat as well. How things are set up and what comes from Hayden’s encounter with Famine are quite unique and interesting.

Famine, the incubus of the series, and I’m not exactly thrilled by his name, isn’t really stereotypical and in that I found him to be mysterious, passionate and unique. But he’s also so dearly frustrating in that he knows something, but just can’t quite reveal it. What hints there are open the mysteries to follow in the series and there’s a lot of them he’s involved with that work well and are just barely touched upon, being left for the following books in the series.

The erotica has a very strong male dominated aspect to it, though Hayden’s strength in some really odd moments, and her refusal to simply become Famine’s pet or slave, add a lot to the heat and the erotica when it comes to pass. Some of the erotica feels a bit odd, but there’s a good reason for what happens that makes a lot of sense and in that I thought the story became a lot more interesting as well.

While the story is really interesting, the characters offer a lot, it feels like there might be too many plots fighting for attention at times. Similarly, the rush of the story makes some of the dialogue and narrative seem a little disjointed. When Hayden and Kat’s pasts are touched upon, time was spent in telling what happened, and it helped to ground the story and characters. When Hayden was at her most angry, defying what Famine, and his brother War. who isn’t an incubus, wanted from her, or were willing to do, if she submitted, gave her a strength of character that worked really well.

The work is a really well told opening to the series which is fast-paced, tells much about the world it’s set in and gives the characters a chance to begin their paths. Where the story pauses at the end offers a lot going forwards and there are some really interesting mysteries to unfold.

Four out of five pitchforks.

But it seems like this won’t happen as the work was removed from sale very shortly after it was published. Perhaps the author is rewriting things, perhaps they changed their minds altogether. I’ll look for this work to return and if it does in some other form I’ll review what appears once more and see where things go. It’s a shame few will ever see this work and enjoy the snark and enjoy this as much as I did.
