Plot Summary

What a better time of year than Halloween to be attending the premier and very secretive college for magical beings. Normal holiday festivities take on a very sinister atmosphere in the Monster world. The most popular attraction by far is the haunted maze – where the walls and ground constantly move, revealing terrifying creatures behind every corner and one wrong step could have deadly consequences.

While trying to enjoy the Halloween season at her new school, Mallory Kane has also been obsessed with bringing her best friend Rosa back from the dead. After learning a Resurrection was possible during her first week of Elemental Magic, it is all she can think about. Well that and getting past the trauma of the horrific night when her roommates, sisters Danica and Reyna, tried to kill her.

Danica is also having a difficult time getting over that night and the guilt she feels towards Mallory. While knowing she was under a curse and not able to control her actions, it still eats away at her that she attacked Mallory. Luckily she has her sister, and well Halloween, both eventually bring her around to be her more “normal” self. Helping Mallory track down Rosa’s ghost and bonding during their capture by the police reminds Danica how much she enjoys her new roommate and partner in crime.

Reyna, in her usual maternal role, works her magic by learning more about Resurrections to help Mallory and bring the roommates back together again. Well that, and keeping them out of trouble, which they seem to be able to get into quite frequently. Reyna has to bail them out of jail, but surprisingly is the one to suggest they break into the police station to steal evidence on Rosa’s murder. Unlike her usual demeanor, her dark side does tend to peek out at times.

As Mallory gets to know the sisters more, she starts to realize they are possibly the scariest and most powerful Monsters in existence, and she’s beginning to wonder if she might be just as dangerous. But it’s the Halloween season and time to enjoy themselves – after all, what better time to be a Monster, track down a ghost and perform a Resurrection than Halloween?
