Plot Summary
Scare or be scared…
Lorelei’s School of Deviltry is home to some of the most arrogant and frightening supernatural teens in the world. When you’re a supe whose goal is scaring humans, attending the legendary academy is a must. Lilith Martin, a succubus, needs to win a seat on student council because she believes all supernaturals should have a say at the legendary school. But when a bloodborne vampire, Kamila Tesarova, decides to run for the coveted seat too, Lilith is met with trouble. Someone is reporting her actions with Milos Petrovich, another royal vampire, to the headmistress. Lilith needs to secure the vote before Kamila convinces the student body to vote against the succubus, or Lilith’s relationship with Milos gets her expelled.
But there’s a conspiracy on campus. How can Lilith win the election, and get to the bottom of what’s really going on?
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 28, 2020
There are some schools that just give you a bad feeling from the moment you arrive. For Lilith, there’s nothing positive about where she finds herself and the attitude of everyone there just rubs her the wrong way. She knows right from wrong, even if the school doesn’t and for a succubus, getting pushed around will never end well for someone.
The work is something of a coming of age story with a mystery wrapped around the edges along with a bit of romance and self-discovery. There is a bit of an anime school theme feel to the setting and characters as well, which tends to shift the dialogue and plot towards being a little over the top at times. That’s really not too much of an issue as there are moments when the main character, Lilith, has to become very serious about where she is and what she is being confronted with.
Lilith, while being the main character, is one of a number of succubi who appear in the story, including her sister. They all have very distinct personalities and each has a viewpoint and their own story to tell. Their succubus aspects are woven into the story, but they aren’t too dramatic in their appearances overall. They are, for the most part, a group of like beings in a school with other beings and they all are in a bad spot trying to sort their way towards something better.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
Overall the part of this work that I enjoyed was the succubi mythos that was created and how detailed that became as the story unfolded. Otherwise it is a cute story with a bit of an anime vibe to it that worked well. How the story closed was a bit of a shame as the work’s title sort of suggested there would be a series to follow, but the ending didn’t set that up with the characters. Still, it’s a fun work with some thoughtful moments that I did enjoy.
