Willa’s past has driven her to hunt incubi. Gabriel’s live has driven him to be something other than what he is expected to be. When they collide each must ask themselves a question. For one the question is if they can change, for the other the question is did they change enough?
The story is mainly focused on Willa, her life, the choices she has made since a very troubling and life changing moment in her life. There’s a deep sadness around her and as the story tells the reason why, it’s even more so, defining why she’s made the choice she has to hunt incubi and remove them. The thing about that, and it is something that adds to her sadness, is there’s seemingly no finality to her actions.
Willa has this air of need, to overcome her own demons, but that causes her to be less than what she needs to be. By that I mean she’s so wrapped up in her revenge that it’s surprising that she’s smart enough, or lucky enough, to have lived as long as she has.
That brings Gabriel, the incubus of the work, into play. In this universe there are many supernatural beings, many of which are “evil” to some extent. For Gabriel, he sees his kind as being very “evil” in what they do to others. There came a point where he decided that there was a better way to live and he took that path.
All of this means the main characters have a lot of story to tell, to explain where they are, but most of all, that story needs to give meaning to why the two of them are attracted to each other so strongly. That’s what’s missing here. The heat is lovely, the characters are interesting and involve the reader in the story. But there’s no real explanation of why Willa feels as she does. There’s no reflective aspect told in Gabriel. There are hints, an idea, but it doesn’t play out much.
Overall, that is the problem with this work. Willa talks about her past, but it’s not really dealt with. Gabriel talks about choice, but it’s not seen. The two characters dance around each other until they fall together and the erotica comes. The scene is lovely, Willa is very demanding and Gabriel is more than willing to give Willa what she desires. The moment is shattering for them both and it causes Willa to have to think about her life, her choice and what that means to Gabriel.
The aftermath and the resolution doesn’t quite go far enough to settle a lot of the questions left. Choices are made, the scene is delightful and it reveals more about both characters than the entire work did prior to that moment. But things are unresolved, there is hope, for both, but there’s still the question as to what’s pulled the two of them together.
Well written, the characters have emotion and life. The problem comes in the disconnect between the why of their choices and the resolution of the story. There’s too much left open, not told or vaguely hinted at to give a reason for one important question. Why these two?
While this work originally appeared as part of a short story collection, it has been issued as a stand alone work now. I’d like to see what comes next for both characters. Willa can be more than her sadness and uncertainty. Gabriel can be more than a means for soothing her. Together, there might be something for them both. That’s what I’d like to see, whatever that may be.

There was a lot of story missing, in both Gabriel and Willa. The connection between them, while there, was missing aspects to explain it better. The past wasn’t told nearly as much as I would have liked. I feel like there needed to be a story after this, to follow their relationship further. Mind you, burgers and fries after sex isn’t a bad place to start…
