Plot Summary

In a world where the public knows about the existence of supernatural creatures, hardened human private eye Jake Monroe makes a living cracking cases with a paranormal element. A resident of LA’s gayest neighborhood, Jake fills his days with work, drink, and men.

When famous social media influencer Ashton Kane is haunted by an incubus, Jake takes the case, enlisting his trusty assistant Val and ex-boyfriend Nico to help him. Jake soon finds himself the target of several supernatural assassins while debating if he should get back together with Nico, with whom he always had incredible sex but also terrible fights.

Eventually Jake comes face to face with the incubus in a climactic showdown. Will he find the inner strength needed to face his demons, both literal and figurative?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 26, 2024

It’s one thing to be a private eye and it’s a completely different thing when your world revolves around the supernatural. The mysteries are darker, the relationships are deeper. Not everything is as it seems and when the veil is lifted, what’s left offers no sympathy for what one’s heart demands.

The work is a mixture of supernatural and mystery themes with the erotica having a strong male/male element which adds in some BDSM aspects. It’s complex, the character are even more so and how things unfold offers a lot in the way of telling the story and allowing it to breathe.

The erotic elements tell a lot about the main character Jake, his love, his personality, and how he seems himself. It also provides a well told glimpse of this story universe and those that are within it. The erotica isn’t over the top, it makes sense for what Jakes needs and how he tries to sort out his own feelings as well.

As the mystery unfolds, at the climax, the character that has been pulling the strings and creating the darkness which envelopes the characters, is revealed to be an incubus. Still, they are a minor character in the work, really never being much more than a shadow. When they do appear, it’s a bit disappointing in that they are more stereotypical than I would have liked them to be.

They are meant to be the catalytic for the story, and in that respect it works well, but otherwise they aren’t really part of the story except for a short passage before the story comes to a close.

Three out of five pitchforks.

This is is a story with an incubus as one of the characters and not a work about an incubus. Being barely in the story overall, the really interesting focus is in the plot and the mystery. Otherwise this just is not using the incubus character save for one short moment and it’s a bit of a shame they were.
