Plot Summary

Here's the most important thing you need to know about demon fighting. It's not a noble calling, it's not about saving the world. It's a job. Most of the time I get in, outsex a pesky incubus and get out with the cash.

But my latest case means staying celibate until battle day and suddenly my hormones are on fire. Anything that moves looks good. I can beat the hell out of this incubus but can I defeat my own libido?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on May 9, 2017

Clem deals with demons and her next job, well her only job, is to deal with an incubus. But that means she can’t get what she wants, and suddenly it’s all around her. Still, the money’s good and she always gets her… man.

The work is a delightfully funny introduction to the main character of the series, Clem, telling a bit about her past, some of the other characters in the series, and setting up the first work in the series quite well.

Clem herself is snarky at times, occasionally a little over the top in her internal monologues, but even that I can, for the most part overlook, as it builds up her character really quickly. But the work moves very quickly and there’s not a lot of time to really get in touch with who she is and her past. It’s skimmed over, mentioned in passing in the rush to land her in some really funny situations.

There’s not really a lot of erotica in the work, there are a few little flashes of heat, but the point of the work isn’t the erotica as it is setting up Clem as a character, make her interesting and hook the reader into reading the first work in the series when it appears.

While the work is titled Incubus, there’s really very little in the way of one appearing. Clem talks about them, speaks of how she will have to deal with them, but as for the incubus themselves, they are rather fleeting in the story. There’s a twist in the story as well, which really seemed telegraphed well before it actually happened and somehow that took away a bit from the overall story. It did point out that Clem isn’t perfect, but at the same time the hints along the way seemed too obvious.

While Clem is a really good character, the story just moves very quickly and that just took something from the work for me. While it is a tease, really, I’d have liked perhaps something more than how things ended as a whole. The overall story about Clem is a delight to read, it’s amazingly funny, but it takes up so much of the work that when push comes to solve, there’s not enough time to bring up the heat or add more to the story under the story. I’ll hope that the first work to come takes more time to tell the story and not be in so much of a rush to get to the ending.

Four out of five pitchforks.

There’s a lot to like here, the glimpse of the series looks to be a lot of fun, if the twist in the ending was just a bit expected. Still, there’s something good here and I do look forward to seeing what comes next.

Perhaps that will include a bit less internal monologue from Clem and a lot more story, whether that be erotic or not. There’s a lot to tell about this universe and getting to that will be, in a lot of ways, the most interesting part of the series of all.
