Plot Summary

Just when Meical discovers how much he wants to live... Just when Caroline discovers how much she wants to love... They are forced to defend both life and love against death itself.

Having struck a deadly bargain with the ancient vampire known as the Alchemist, Meical Grabian submits to the Alchemist's experimentation and allows himself to be transformed from vampire to incubus. In return, Meical gains the one thing he has longed for in his dark existence: the chance to feel the sun on his face. As an incubus, he will be impervious to sunlight--the downside is that he won't survive the transformation for more than a few days.

All Meical wants to do is to endure the first grueling hours of his new existence long enough to see the sun rise for the first time in 200 years. When the Alchemist provides him with his first prey, it all seems simple. Right on cue, psychologist Caroline Bengal rescues him from a snowy field in the Poconos and takes him into the warmth of her cabin. But in spite of his desperation and mercenary hunger, Meical finds himself beguiled by her inner beauty and empathic abilities and drawn to Caroline as he has never felt drawn to a human before. When he finds out another kind of monster is stalking her, one just as cunning and dangerous as any vampire, he realizes he wants to protect her for as long as he has left to live, even if it means hiding his true nature from her by creating the world of her dreams--a world where he can heal and strengthen her with his love.

When Meical Grabian's lost soul cries out to Caroline Bengal on that dark, cold night, she can't turn away. From the moment she feels the throb of life in Meical, she understands there is something utterly remarkable about this quiet, troubled man with a haunting secret. Never has she wanted to heal someone so badly. But no one has ever managed to slip past her inner shield with such ease, either. Having survived a near-fatal beating that cost her a leg, she trusts no one, yet something about Meical Grabian induces her to ignore the instincts that have kept her one step ahead of her nemesis. Even though her very soul tells her she has deeper, more lasting reasons for not wanting to say goodbye to Meical Grabian, loving him means putting them both at risk. Her enemy is getting closer.

5 out of 5 stars

  • Deep romantic fantasy

He agreed to the radical medical experiment in hopes of saving vampire-kind from extinction. The alchemist changed vampire Meical Grabian, but not in ways he wanted. When he awakens several months after the transformation was performed, Meical finds he has become an incubus who needs extreme levels of passion for sustenance.

Meical saved Caroline Bengal the empathy from a psychopath just as he began the experimental conversion. In the Poconos he does not remember doing this, but feels an urge to reach out to her. Caroline is confused by her attraction to the incubus, as she feels this obsessive need to help Meical; he, in turn, feels a deep gut need to have her by his side. However, a third party wants Caroline and is willing to kill to take her.

The strength to this deep romantic fantasy is the yin and yang interpersonal connection between the lead couple. The other member of the triangle adds tension to the exciting story line. However, the relationship between Meical and Caroline brings profundity to the entertaining plot as each wonders if his need for her is chemically induced or heart felt.
