Isabelle’s life is about as ordinary as it could possibly be, but a dinner fling at her mother’s connects Isabelle with Devon who she can’t get out of her thoughts. But Devon holds a secret, one that involves Isabelle deeply. Things are never going to be the same and Isabelle isn’t so sure that’s a good, or a bad thing.
Isabelle, the main character, is wonderfully complex, having a deeply told history, relationships and past that add a lot to the story that comes. She isn’r perfect, there are many flaws and problems for her to deal with every day. But at the same time there’s a sense that she feels like there’s something else going on, but she can’t put her finger on it.
It’s that question of what else is happening that drives this work forwards. The various subplots twine around each other, some of them merging and creating paths towards something larger and certainly dangerous for Isabelle to face. At times she’s very lost, occasionally well out of her depth, but that’s part of her charm. She’s not totally hopeless, but there’s an undercurrent of missing something within and that is what draws Devon to her and starts the work to rush headlong into the main plot.
Devon the main incubus character of this work, doesn’t really come out with a lot of detail about himself, his past, and the overall problems that Isabelle is facing now that she’s “become”. He’s very much a cypher, a mystery and while that’s attractive, and Isabelle is attracted to him, it left me wanting. It’s clear there’s more to be told about him, but leaving much of that information to be told by a secondary character seemed a bit wrong overall.
The flashes of erotica have good heat, are wonderfully sexy, but don’t stray into being over the top or silly. There’s a real connection between the characters, and I liked that very much. The exploration of both Isabelle’s powers and what that does to Devon, and vice versa, is a delight to read. Even in the moments where Isabelle is dealing with her own needs and wants, there’s a warm feeling of desire, not a wild overwhelmed creature of lust and that worked quite well.
There are a few very small editing mistakes, mainly involving using similar sounding words in the wrong way, but that’s a minor quibble. The story tends to fall into the minutia of what’s going on quite a lot, many of those details seeming to have little meaning to the overall story arc. As such, the story drags on occasion, but that’s overcome by the heat of the erotica, the mystery of Isabelle and just who Devon is.
While really there’s no resolution to any of the plot points, nor should there be considering that the work was to be the opening of a series, there’s a feeling that a scene of two was dropped out, leaving some comprehension to the wayside. In spite of this, the characters have depth, the story is enthralling and the work does leave a need to see what comes next. But that never happened, at least at the time of this review.

It’s a shame the author never continued the series, nor is there any sign of their website or anything else. There’s a good story here, it begins well and offers quite a lot overall. Sadly, the rest of the story, it seems, will never be told.
