But has this incubus met his match in his literal dream woman? And will Emmy be up for the challenge?

Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on January 30, 2024

Emmy has some problems, but the largest of them is something she can’t quite bring herself to confront. Still, sex is a good escape and Emmy has always enjoyed those times. For the most part. Perhaps a suggestion by her recently married sister will get her mind off things, or it might force her to see herself in a new light. For Padraig, his time is soon coming to a close without finding the mate to complete him. His best friend suggests a course of action, but Padraig doesn’t expect anything. Until he meets Emmy and what comes next will change them both, if they can find their way through the fears.

The work is a well told exploration of self-worth and discovery which leads to something of a rollercoaster of need which ebbs and flows throughput. The erotica has wonderful heat at times, which I enjoyed as well. Further, Padraig being an incubus, and not at all what might be expected, was quite interesting to explore. However, what really captured my thoughts was the theme of eternals, which those that know me will understand.

Padraig, the incubus of this work, has the sexual aspects of an incubus, the power to dream walk into the minds of others and, yes, he feeds on those he is intimate with as well. But he has no horns or tail and beyond the explanation of what his powers are, annoyingly there’s no explanation or exploration of what, exactly, an incubus is exactly. That brings up a far more critical question at the end of the work, and it’s one that still makes me wonder.

Regardless of the nits in the story, overall the story is mainly focused on both characters, and especially Emmy, coming to terms with their nature and their own faults. It’s deeply consuming in those moments, the internal monologue at times is both frustrating and pulls at the heart. Both characters dance around their attraction, which leads to some sad moments, but the character development that comes from them changes both over time and makes the climax and aftermath feel earned by both.

The work could use one more editing pass for a scattering of odd dialogue, word and spelling mistakes which I tripped over from time to time. Some of the dialogue, especially at the climax needed more emotion, more raw expression of the hurt and desire both characters have. The balance of the story is written really well,, and there’s so much to enjoy by far. But adding a little more emphasis on Emmy’s raw pain when it surfaces, and having Padraig be a little more open at the climax with her would have meant a lot. While that climax makes sense and helps to bring closure, it feels like there’s a part missing in which they both bare their souls before their passions take over and I really wanted to have that moment appear.

The work ends on a note that works well overall, but I think a little unsatisfying. Emmy’s future leaves a question open, which circles back to two questions. One is Padraig’s nature as an incubus which then brings the larger question about Emmy and their enteral future together.

As she is human, how does she become as long-lived as Padraig? I find myself wondering if, somehow, because of her sexual nature and desires, that some sort of succubus transformation occurs, but, again, this isn’t the normal versions of either succubi or incubi based on the story itself, so what does that mean? It’s a very large open plot point which I didn’t expect to be resolved, and it wasn’t. But if it was, wouldn’t that be so interesting to explore?

Four out of five pitchforks.

Having read the prior work, which was vampire themed, and not at all what you might expect, and this one, the series is delightful in the characters and storytelling. A bit rushed at points, there are leaps of faith the redder needs to make at a few points as well. That said, the series is a lovely erotic romantic work and was a delight. A bit more universe building rather than hand waving of some critical questions would have added a lot. As a incubus story it’s unique and captivating which always delights me.
