Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on June 20, 2021

There are monsters to be found, some are obvious in their evil and some are cloaked in desires and wants. Falling to one leaves much to be desired and much to be fearful of.

The work tells a story of the main character falling to the whims of a succubus and what happens as a result. It’s interesting in how the character progressively loses themselves, the guilt the succubus presses into them and, eventually, the collapse of the main character to them.

There’s a scattering of heat in the erotica, the work is more focused on the events around the main character and what they are thinking and feeling. The work never reveals their name, nor that of the succubus either. It’s a bit of a shame as what the succubus’ name is might have helped to explain her actions. Much of the erotica is reactions and from time to time reads a bit clinical rather than seductive.

It’s that point where I have a bit of a problem keeping interested in the story. The succubus is, regrettably, quite stereotypical in her personality, at times being somewhat two dimensional in her point of view, her actions and, most of all, her almost monotone dialogue which seems to suggest she barely cares about anything other than feeding on the main character.

While that is her personality, it makes the dialogue seem too stiff and uneven for the seductive creature she’s supposed to be. Perhaps something more in a seductive tone from the start would have made her more appealing, and considering where the story goes, it would have given her a lot more depth than just the monster she acts as.

The work seems a bit too short, there’s a need to expand the dialogue and the details to make things read better. There’s a good story here, but it’s just missing something to make it a lot more than what comes through the story. The ending points the story in a particular direction and I found myself wondering about that and if the succubus might have bitten off more than she should have. That would be an interesting thing to see, especially if the main character’s girlfriend might be something more than she appears to be.

Three out of five pitchforks.

The work could use another editing pass, mainly for the dialogue which needs more seduction from the succubus and more angst from the main character. It’s an interesting read, but there’s just something missing to make this what it should be.
