Plot Summary
Detective Mark "Kip" Kipper has only recently come to the knowledge of the supernatural world around him. On loan from the Crimson PD to the Department of Paranormal Affairs and Activities, he is assisting Special Agent Xander Sun in investigating a series of attacks made by a mysterious creature that uses lust to capture its prey.
There is only one way to lure this creature out into the open: offering bait she can't resist. ...And there is one man who fits the bill.
Will Kip be able to resist the pull of a creature who feeds on desire, or will he succumb to the ecstasy she promises in poisoned honey whispers? Even a southern gentleman has his limits.
Book Review
The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on https://www.succubus.net/blog/2020/07/24/a-review-of-bait-a-tale-from-knightcrest-i-by-erica-beale/ July 24, 2020]
The dark holds secrets than shouldn’t be chased after. There are powers which should not be trifled with, and those that do not need the warnings given can only fall to their own desires.
The work is a fantasy adventure crime drama with a succubus erotica edge. The story is complicated as are the characters as well, which makes how things unfold far more interesting as a result. Once past the crime drama aspects, when the succubus of the work fully appears, the story turns fully to them, their power, and the threat their darkness holds.
Mae, the succubus of the story, very much shades who she really is and what she can really do throughout the story. It’s a shame because the truth of her honestly is so much more interesting to know when looking back on the story and it also, in a way, gives rise to the realization that those that seek her really have no good idea of the darkness she is. But her nature as a succubus, the power she holds, and the sexual predator she is can’t be mistaken. She toys with those in the story, and when her nature comes fully out, it’s really quite striking a thing to see.
Three out of five pitchforks.
The story ended in an interesting place, and there are a number of threads left dangling. With that said, there’s a darkness in the story which seeps into all of the characters in various ways. Seeing how that becomes tangled further will be interesting to see happen.
