Book Review

The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on April 9, 2024

Secrets held beyond the curtain are those which tell a story that should’t have ever been. Vita is Leya’s friend, but there’s something wrong that isn’t spoken about. A choice made leads to the truth revealed and a fate that neither will survive unscathed.

The work reads very much like a role playing game session, the narrative shifts perspective often and reads very much like a stream of consciousness at times. There is a mixture of mind control, succubus and futa themes which draw the main characters together and drive them into the erotica which makes up a large part of the story. The erotica is rather tepid as a whole, the setting, relationship and Vita’s reveal just don’t add a lot to what might have been a more heated part of the work.

Vita, who is transformed into being a futa succubus, really doesn’t feel like one. It’s suggested, there are aspects of her being a succubus, but the story really doesn’t give a lot of focus to her actually being a succubus beyond having her way with Leya. She resists the curse, she tries to overcome it, and that gives her character some development. But when the tide turns, there’s just so very little of her succubus nature that comes out.

How the story is told feels very lost from the start. It dances around getting to the confrontation and doesn’t seem to want to get there. That’s not to say there isn’t a story being told however. There is one, it’s interesting, but how that is placed on the page leaves a lot to be desired. The dialogue reads oddly, the narrative seems clumsy too.

The work could use a serious editing to fix how it flows, add more depth to the characters as well. Beyond that, the close of the work is just so very disappointing. It’s too short, too quick, and doesn’t have the impact it really needed. Regret shouldn’t be a mention contained in one sentence. The last paragraph easily could have been a chapter in itself and that would have given the story the emotional impact it really is missing.

Overall, the story seems lost and unsure of where it’s going for the most part. There’s very little of Vita being a succubus beyond the sex scenes. As for how the story closes, that feels very much like a story in itself that should have been explored or needs to be with a follow on work.

Two out of five pitchforks.

It’s a shame that Vita’s corruption and transformation wan’t explored. There’s good deal of story that could have been in a flash back or a flash forward at the end. The shame here is all of he possibilities that didn’t appear and they really could have if the story had found its focus.
