Scream a Little Dream was the third episode of the second season of the series, and the sixteenth overall episode of the Canadian television series Lost Girl. It was first shown on the Showcase Television Channel in Canada on September 18th. 2011 at 9 PM Eastern time.

Plot
Short Summary
Bo is contacted by a Fae who works as a doorman in an apartment building. The humans that live there are losing their minds and he asks for Bo's help to figure out why and stop it. Kenzi hires a Brownie to clean Bo's home and look after their needs, but she takes him for granted against Trick's warnings and things go from good to worse quickly. The new Ash comes between Lauren and Bo, severing their relationship and forbidding them from seeing each other again without his permission. Bo finds herself having nightmares that sap her strength, eventually discovering that her dreams and that of the ill humans are being fed upon by a Mare, a Dark Fae that feeds on the nightmares of others to survive. Bo eventually discovers that the doorman is a Dark Fae called a Sandman, taking advantage of the chaos among the Light Fae and squatting on part of their territory with the Mare, getting Bo involved in order to have the Mare feed on her. Attempting to kill the Mare, she has dreams of an older version of herself and of Dyson that try to keep her in her dreams, but she escapes with the help of a Baku, a Light Fae that can stop the effects of a Mare. Bo ends the threat, the Ash makes an attempt to have Bo work for him, but she refuses his offer, and the Brownie leaves to help the Baku.
Detailed Summary
The episode begins with Kenzi (Kensia Solo) screaming in pain while holding a broom in her hands standing in the middle of the mess that Bo's place has become. Bo (Anna Silk) rushes in to ask what is happening and the answer is that Kenzi somehow got a splinter in her finger from the broom. Bo teases her about battling all kinds of Fae and then being taken down by a broom. Kenzi answers that with "oh, like you have never been suckered by a big shaft of wood?" Bo winces a bit at the comment and Kenzi asks why they are cleaning up the place instead of going out on the town battling bad guys. Bo tells her that she is "trying to scrub away the wolf that shall not be named." Kenzi tries to make Bo feel better and tells her that she will clean up the place somehow.
The scene shifts to an apartment building called The Crawford where we see a doorman standing outside. He opens the door for an older woman, Mrs. Farlinger (Jill Frapper), who steps outside seemingly confused for a moment before running back inside of the building and then running headlong into a concrete pillar, knocking her unconscious. The doorman rushes over to help her, but moments later the other residents of the building appear, all of whom seem to be elderly and confused.
After the opening montage, we return to see the doorman sitting at a coffee shop pouring vast amounts of sugar into a cup of coffee. Kenzi and Bo arrive, Kenzi making some jokes about the doorman's clothing which go completely over his head before Bo greets him and asks why he called them. The doorman, Frank (Jason Blicker), tells them about the strange goings on at his building explaining that all of the humans there have "mush for brains." He indicates that he is Light Fae and the building is his territory, that he cares for the humans there, but does not explain what kind of Fae he is. Frank also explains that he has asked for assistance from the new Ash (Vincent Walsh), thinking that the cause of what is happening is Dark Fae, but was told that his problems were his own and the Ash would not help him. Bo decides to help Frank as her dislike for the new Ash continues to grow. He leaves for the apartments as Bo makes a phone call. She calls Lauren and asks her if she would meet them there to have a look at what is happening and if Lauren can figure out what exactly is going on. Kenzi tells Bo that she knows that she and Lauren have some things to work out and leaves saying that they don't need a third wheel there when they do.
Kenzi goes to the Dal Riata to talk to Trick, telling him of their problems. A Fae further down the bar listens into the conversation and eventually offers his services to Kenzi explaining that he is a Brownie named Mumphert (Cliff Saunders). Kenzi asks Trick what the catch is with Brownies including asking if they eat humans, but Trick reassures her that they don't, they eat honey and cereal, and that they are perfectly safe but gives her a warning not to take Mumphert for granted. Kenzi happily agrees to Mumphert's offer of help and the two of them leave Trick's for Bo's home.
Bo and Lauren in the meanwhile are at the Crawford, Bo looking around and gathering samples while Lauren examines Mrs. Farlinger. After Mrs. Farlinger passes out, Lauren tells Bo that she has not got a good idea of what exactly is causing the problem, noting that it could be Dark Fae, a virus or mold. Bo thanks her for helping to which Lauren answers, "Always." Bo asks if Lauren is happy with the new Ash being in charge and being free to which Lauren explains that it is more complicated than Bo understands. Lauren tells Bo that she will explain everything but before she can Mrs. Farlinger wakes up screaming and stops them from talking. As this happens a woman in black passes behind them and vanishes with neither Bo or Lauren seeing her. As Mrs. Farlinger collapses again, Bo continues to gather samples and Lauren continues to examine Mrs. Farlinger.
Kenzi is enjoying the work of Mumphert at Bo's home which is now almost spotlessly clean. Bo arrives and complains about spending six hours at the Crawford with little to show for it. Kenzi asks if they talked about more interesting things, Bo tells her they didn't but that "Lauren is yummy when she is being professional." Mumphert appears at that moment with a mug of hot cocoa startling Bo and Kenzi explains about the Brownie that she has hired to look after the place, and for free which Bo seems to be alright with if confused. Later that night, Mumphert is cleaning up when something or someone passes by him, but he ignores whatever it is. Bo wakes up with a start from sleep and taking a weapon, stalks around her home. Eventually to her surprise finding Dyson (Kristen Holden-Ried) in her shower. He explains that he needed to clean up and hoped that she wouldn't mind if he did so. Bo drops the knife she had been carrying and embraces him, the two of them caressing each other. Dyson then rips her heart out of her chest and Bo wakes up screaming revealing that this event was a dream. Kenzi rushes into Bo's room and she finds a woman dressed in black sitting on top of Bo in bed attacking her. Bo awakes and fights off her attacker who turns into wisps of black smoke and then passes through Kenzi before vanishing. Kenzi asks what is going on and Bo answers that she thinks she has figured out what has been driving the humans crazy.
The next morning, Bo and Kenzi are shocked to discover that Mumphert has completely transformed their home into a model of cleanliness and left them some breakfast which is probably the best that either of them have ever had. Kenzi seems slightly concerned that Mumphert ate all of the Honey Berry Crunch, but Bo brushes that off. She admits that she didn't sleep at all that night because of the fear of having a crazy lady laying on top of her and Kenzi remarks that it wasn't any better for her as she had to see Bo's attacker "about five seconds from going reverse cowgirl on you." However, Mumphert didn't see Bo's attacker return that night. In spite of that, Bo notes that she has had nightmares every time she fell asleep and she thinks that somehow her attacker is still with her. Bo then leaves, telling Kenzi to keep on top of the "Honey Berry Crunch situation."
Bo talks to Trick who surmises that Bo's attacker is a Mare, normally a Dark Fae that gives humans bad dreams and then feed on the fear that is created by them. Bo asks him to look through his books for a solution against the Mare. Immediately thereafter, Bo is seen at Lauren's home, a brain scanner around her head as she sleeps, Lauren looking at the readouts from it. Bo suddenly awakes and tells Lauren that it was a nightmare, and that it involved a very strong hunger, but not like the hunger she has when she needs to feed. Lauren comes to the conclusion that there is a mental link between Bo and the Mare, and Bo feels as if she is in the Mare's mind as well through the link. Lauren tells Bo that this might be a sign that she is more powerful than they know and then goes in search of something to keep Bo awake.
Mumphert presents Kenzi with a gift to her amazement of a piece of clothing that she had always wanted but could never find. Mumphert comments that Brownies make excellent personal shoppers as they have a gift for retail. Kenzi tells him that he is the most wonderful man she has ever met which makes Mumphert very happy. He does however remind Kenzi that they are out of Honey Berry Crunch and she should bring some home the next time she is out, but Kenzi brushes that suggestion off and comments that Mumphert could have bought some. He clearly warns her that she needs to buy some the next time she is out again.
Lauren continues to look for something to help Bo with little success, and comments about some pills she has somewhere, but then thinks better of it as she thinks that Bo probably doesn't need to know what is in them. Bo agrees and then asks Lauren to tell her about the Light Fae and what Lauren's relationship is to them. Lauren attempts to tell Bo, but the new Ash (Vincent Walsh) interrupts them. He asks if Bo is short for something and then takes a seat. He reminds Bo that he is the new Ash and Bo replies that she remembers an ass prancing in the woods with a bow and arrow. When he comments that he is a stickler for protocol, Lauren drops to her knees in front of him to Bo's horror. The Ash tells Bo that everything that the old Ash owned is his and that includes Lauren's Lab and her as well, calling Lauren chattel. Then two of his men take possession of Lauren to take her away. Bo threatens to break the hand of one of the men but the Ash warns her that Lauren is his property and that if she wants to see her again that she will have to make a formal request to him to do so. Bo then brandishes a knife to threaten the Ash, but Lauren pleads with her to stop and not interfere. She is then lead away, the Ash leaving moments later taunting Bo with the comment, "good times."
Bo and Kenzi then appear at Trick's place, Kenzi trying everything she can think of to keep Bo awake. Trick tells them of a Fae called a Baku which can stop the effects of a Mare. A live Baku feeds on bad dreams and nightmares, but as the pelt of a dead Baku wards off all disease, they have been hunted to extinction and are incredibly hard to find. Trick thinks that Lauren might have records of Baku. Bo tells Trick that Lauren was taken away by the Ash and she is worried. Trick assures her that Lauren is being treated with respect at the Ash's compound, but this does not make Bo feel any better. Trick gives her some advice to walk carefully around the new Ash as they know nothing about him.
Bo goes to see the Ash and is told to wait for the Ash to call her. She strikes up a conversation with a man waiting there who asks for a magazine and then turns into the Mare (Kristina Pesic). She awakes from the nightmare to see the Ash standing across from her. He taunts her making comments about her in general and succubi in particular, Bo trying her best to ignore them. She asks to see Lauren, but he refuses saying that Lauren is too busy. He also admits that he bet against his men that Bo would appear so soon and lost a thousand dollars to them. He taunts her with "Seductress, Warrior, Fashion Refugee" and asks what her act is all about to which Bo tells him clearly that it is not an act. The Ash tells Bo that she will only see Lauren if it is in the interest of the Light Fae, Bo says it is, but he comments that he thought that was the Ash's job. Bo then tells him that she took on Frank's problem to which the Ash seems to have no idea what she is talking about. When he continues to claim ignorance, Bo loses her temper and calls him an "arrogant little prick" among other choice words. He turns away to leave, but Bo apologizes for her words in desperation. The Ash turns back and tells Bo that no one named Frank has ever talked to him about anything and Bo leaves after curtseying to him half heartedly.
Meanwhile, Kenzi is at home enjoying Mumphert's work, but she discovers to her surprise that things are not as rosy as they once were. As Kenzi has come to take Mumphert for granted, he has stopped caring about her and Bo. The food is bad, all of the clothing is coming apart, and other disasters befall Kenzi. Mumphert tells Kenzi she knows what she has done and when she tells him to leave, he tells her that he won't because she made this his home. Bo goes to see Frank at the Crawford and finds the front doors locked. Eventually Frank allows her to enter and she confronts him with the knowledge that she knows he never went to see the Ash. Frank blows some dust into Bo's face and she collapses, Frank then carries her into the building.
After the commercial, Bo has a nightmare about being at the Dal Riata, unable to get out of a chair she is sitting in, as her friends talk about her. All of them are caricatures of themselves, Lauren in particular having long fingers and nose, and then leave. Moments after they leave, the Mare appears and taunts her. She vanishes and Bo says "B is for Bo." Then the walls and floor are covered in a black liquid which then covers Bo as she screams in terror. She awakens to find herself tied to a chair and Frank standing over her. He tries to explain that what he did was out of his control, but Bo knocks him out and breaks free of the chair.
Kenzi returns home dragging a huge bag behind her and calling Mumphert's name. He then appears wearing Kenzi's clothing and telling her that he thought that she had abandoned everything and everyone. Kenzi tries to make up with him and shows that in the bag she brought with her are many boxes of Honey Berry Crunch to Mumphert's delight. They make up and then Kenzi makes a request of him to find a live Baku for her. He happily agrees to her request.
Bo meanwhile feeds on Frank and gets him to tell her about himself and what is going on. It turns out that Frank is a Dark Fae, that he is squatting on Light Fae territory, and that he is doing so because the Light Fae are in confusion. When Bo asks why she was dragged into this, Frank explains that Connie, his girl, is so very hungry. Bo figures out that he means the Mare, but she seems to be getting sleepy the longer she is close to Frank. He tells her that he is a Sandman and that his Fae power is that he can put people to sleep, but he himself cannot sleep. That makes him useless to Connie, but the humans in the building are a snack for her and that Bo is the main course. He also reveals that he sheds dust like cats shed dander and that is why Bo is slowly falling asleep and then slumps to the floor. Frank then calls Connie into the room, who is pregnant, and she begins to berate him for being careless and stupid. They start to argue, Connie noting that she is eating for six, and that eventually wakes Bo who attempts to escape them.
Coming back, Bo makes it to the elevators, Frank in pursuit. The elevator doors open and she manages to escape him. Frank starts to go after her but his phone rings and he leaves her in a panic. Bo slumps to the floor of the elevator and calls Kenzi. Bo tells her where she is, that she is in real trouble, and that she can't tell reality from dreams anymore. Mumphert arrives at that moment with a Baku (Conrad Bergschneider), he and Kenzi leaving moments later to try and help Bo. Bo stares at the buttons in the elevator and sees that the button for the basement is flashing a blue colour. She presses that button and goes in search of the Mare in the basement. She arrives there and begins to walk down a corridor that at first looks normal but then seems to stretch into infinity the further she walks down it towards a door at the end. The door then suddenly opens to reveal a woman crying in Bo's bed. She approaches the bed and discovers that it is a much older Bo (Jessica Huras). Bo is told that she never loves again after Dyson and Lauren and that everyone dies or abandons her in the end. When Bo tries to leave, old Bo begins to feed on her and traps her there. In the real world, Kenzi arrives with the Baku to find Bo standing in the middle of the hallway in a catatonic state. The Baku holds Bo gently and begins to draw the nightmare from her. In the nightmare, old Bo suddenly falls backwards onto the bed and then vanishes into nothingness. Bo starts to walk away, but then Dyson appears, telling her that he wants to be with her and have things like they once were. The Baku tells Kenzie that he has eaten the bad dreams, but Bo is stuck and it is up to her to make her way out now. Bo and Dyson embrace but then Bo thrusts a knife into Dyson, killing him in the dream and then she breaks free, waking up in the arms of the Baku. She thanks him and hugs him with Kenzi but then asks if he would please go and help the humans in the building. He nods and then goes off in search of them. Kenzi asks if she is okay, but Bo tells her that she can still feel a link with the Mare. Bo then kicks open the door at the end of the hallway to discover Frank and Connie in each other's arms. She tells him that she thinks her water just broke and Bo looks at Kenzi in confusion.
Bo then goes to the Ash and tells him what was happening on his territory. She berates him that someone else had to do his job, but he is unmoved by her words. When Bo turns to leave, he offers her the chance to work for him in a freelance capacity, she would not have to be Light Fae, she could continue to be independent and he would even pay her to do so, but she would do what he told her to. Bo refuses him saying that "if anything arises, I am sure that you will have it well in hand" before walking away from him.
The final scenes begin with Mumphert telling Kenzi that he is leaving her. She tries to have him stay, but he explains that the Baku has been alone for so long and is a shut-in that he is needed more there. Kenzi is sorry to see him go and they part on good terms, Kenzi asking him to keep in touch if he could. Her last gift to him is a giant bag of Honey Berry Crunch for him to take as he leaves. Bo in the meantime crawls into bed as Kenzi enters the bedroom carrying a sword in her hands. Kenzi asks if she has everything she needs to sleep and promises to keep guard over her. Bo just asks her to "keep being you Kenz." Kenzi wishes her goodnight and then leaves Bo alone in her bedroom. She closes her eyes for a moment and then opens them again, still awake as the episode ends.
Questions in this Episode
- It has been shown that Bo can see the auras of others. While it is true that she mainly sees their sexual auras, is it possible that she can differentiate between Light and Dark Fae and Humans?
- When succubi in Lost Girl dream, are the dreams usually sexual in nature?
- When someone is crowned Ash, do they ever use their old name?
- What happens to the old Ash if they are still alive, or, in this case, severely injured? Does the new Ash help them or allow them to pass on?
- If the new Ash receives all of the holdings of the old Ash, if they are alive does that mean they have nothing at all to their name?
- Just how much Honey Berry Crunch can Mumphert eat in a day?
- What happens to Connie and Frank? Does Bo let them go? Does she turn them over to the Ash? This is not made clear in the episode but from Bo's discussion with the Ash, can it be assumed that he had them turned over to the Dark Fae for punishment?

- A Brownie is a type of hob, similar to a hobgoblin. Brownies are said to inhabit houses and aid in tasks around the house. However, they do not like to be seen and will only work at night, traditionally in exchange for small gifts or food. Among food, they especially enjoy porridge and honey. They usually abandon the house if their gifts are called payments, or if the owners of the house misuse them. Brownies make their homes in an unused part of the house. The portrayal of Brownies in this episode is generally in line with the traditional legends.
- Brownies in the Lost Girl universe seem to enjoy Honey Berry Crunch. A lot.
- When a new Ash is crowned, all of the old Ash's belongings and chattel, or humans, becomes theirs.
- A Mare is a spirit or goblin in Germanic folklore which rides on people's chests while they sleep, bringing on bad dreams or nightmares. The Mare in the Lost Girl universe appear to act generally in line with the traditional legends.
- A Baku is a Japanese supernatural being that devours dreams and nightmares. The Baku in the Lost Girl universe do perform this act, but their pelt is said to ward off all disease. They have been hunted almost to extinction which makes them rare Fae that are incredibly hard to find.
- A Sandman is a mythical character in Western folklore who brings good dreams by sprinkling magical sand onto the eyes of children while they sleep at night. In the Lost Girl universe, they appear to be shedding sand all of the time which can put anyone to sleep within moments of exposure to it. They are also Dark Fae in nature which is not correct with the traditional myth.
- This episode has possibly the most number of named Fae beings in a single episode in the series so far.
