			Morrisey’s life has been hell from the beginning. Loss after loss, the only constant is his pain and the bottle that waits for him. A chance encounter reveals a world unexpected with its own problems, but as well there’s a glimmer of light too. Justice will be served, it’s the one thing he has been able to keep hold of and perhaps Farren, his new partner again crime will offer something for them both.

			The work is mainly a murder mystery wrapped around a fantasy adventure theme. It’s complicated, fast paced, and gives a lot to consider as the mystery unravels. The characters are well written and how they develop over the story works really well.

			There is a very strong m/m erotica theme that develops as the main characters are drawn together that was delightful to see. The erotica fits the characters well, there’s passion, conflict and a slow building of understanding that just was everything to bring the story to its climax and give meaning to all else that happened.

			Jessa, the succubus of the work, isn’t at all stereotypical and while she appears at first to be somewhat so, as things progress and more is revealed about her, it’s very telling and unique. She gives a different view of things, both in a world view and a view seen through the eyes of a succubus. Her existence, the choices she has made and how she being a succubus and how the overall story works with regards to souls, was just so very unexpected. It gives Jessa a kind of ‘succubus with a heart of gold’ touch to her and that was just captivating.

			With all that said, the evil presence in the story was a bit too stereotypical for me. The final conflict also pushed that aspect to the limit and while it needed to be so for the sake of tying up loose ends and getting the characters to where they needed to be, it just felt odd. Much of that was in the very over the top dialogue from them, or the described expressions which did make them eminently unlikeable, but that was the point of course.

			Four out of five pitchforks.

			This is not a story about a succubus, but rather a story with a succubus on the fringes of it. It’s a shame that Jessa wasn’t really explored, that save for some information in passing there was little revealed about the succubi in this universe. That’s something which the author might think about if they ever write a follow on story. There’s a lot to explore there and I dearly wish it had been.

Darkness follows Lieutenant Morrisey James.
