'' | ''The following review was originally published by Tera on her Blog, A Succubi's Tale on [https://www.succubus.net/blog/2017/06/02/a-review-of-midnight-witch-by-c-j-desade/ June 2, 2017]''
John makes a wish and in doing so calls Steph to his side. She offers him something he desires, but with certain rules. The gift offered gives John something and at the same time Steph learns that not every needs a fantasy, some need her.
The work tells of the encounter between John and Steph, how their relationship develops and through that, allows for some wonderfully hot erotic scenes to be played out between them. Steph explains that she isn’t quite a succubus, among many other possible supernatural beings, but overall, the work feels like it wants to press that she’s able to make John’s fantasies come true. It’s done in a way that reads very much like a succubus, but with some quite well thought out differences.
It’s those differences that make Steph far more interesting, giving her depth and something of a history to tell, if that’s done fleetingly overall. There are some teases about others like her, about her past, and so on, but they aren’t played off fully and that bothered me to an extent. I’d have liked more about Steph’s world, even if it was more hints than there were. She’s interesting as a character, there’s a real connection between herself and John as well. As the story plays on, the truth comes out from John and the final scene before the conclusion is both wonderfully passionate and tinged with sadness.
The ending wasn’t quite what I was expecting. That’s not a bad thing, overall. I wold have liked something more joyous, more positive for both John and Steph than there is. But from quite early on it’s clear there is something hovering around the edges and when Steph reveals what it is, and what it means, a lot of the joy in the work ebbed away. It wasn’t completely taken away, there’s hope on the edges, and that did lessen the ending’s impact.
The work is written well, the characters have clear voices, needs and desires. The exploration of those desires is a delight and I enjoyed the mixture of story and erotica in how the two sides meshed together well. I would have liked more time spent with Steph and John talking, both revealing themselves more to each other and, perhaps, filling in that last piece of the puzzle that remains when the story closed.
Three and a half out of five pitchforks.
There’s a mystery about Steph, one that isn’t explored, but hinted at. Being that this work appears to be the first in a series, that mystery I hope will be explored further in the works to come. There’s a bit of ambiguity about her, though her feelings for John felt right and the story moved in a delightfully erotic and sensual way. I’ll hope the author continues this series in the same tone, explores more about Steph and her kind.
That story remains and while it might not be the happiest of stories, it does need to be told.
